About the Opportunity

KDFN has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Director of Finance, based in Whitehorse, YT.

In this position, you will lead our financial strategy with a holistic community-wide perspective, overseeing the planning, development, and management of our resources. Your responsibilities include ensuring financial stability, compliance with laws and standards, and supporting strategic goals.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, you will collaborate with Chief and Council, departmental directors, and staff to maintain transparency and integrity in all financial operations.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating annual audits to ensure compliance with financial practices and regulations
  • Developing and implementing processes, systems, and policies for financial management that adhere to accounting principles, regulations, and organizational goals
  • Administering and monitoring Contribution Agreements, funding agreements, and investment portfolios for compliance
  • Providing financial expertise to Chief and Council, Executive Director, and Departmental Directors on budgeting and financial procedures
  • Participating in strategic planning, contributing to goal development and priority-setting
  • Overseeing the collection, recording, and disposition of funds, maintaining proper expenditure authority
  • Forecasting budgetary requirements based on strategic plans and project needs
  • Conducting financial analysis and reporting, providing timely statements and management reports
  • Managing cash flow, investments, borrowing, and loan repayments
  • Ensuring confidentiality and security of financial systems and records
  • Leading departmental budget development and work plans
  • Managing departmental staff, including training and performance evaluation

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you must be a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), ideally with a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience, and senior management/supervisory experience. Equivalent combinations of post-secondary education, substantial CPA coursework, and relevant experience within a First Nation will be considered. If you possess fewer years of experience but have transferrable skills and the determination to excel within the organization, we encourage you to reach out to us.

  • Understanding and willingness to learn and embrace the Kwanlin Dün community, history, agreements, and goals
  • Considerable experience in strategic leadership and providing senior-level financial/budgetary advice
  • Demonstrated proficiency in accounting principles, including budget development, financial reporting, and controls
  • Capability to manage, monitor funding agreements, and interpret and enforce relevant acts, regulations, and policies
  • Expertise in financial consultation, with a strong ability to interpret and revise regulations and policies
  • Advanced skills in policy and procedure development, financial records management, and the ability to elucidate complex regulations
  • Comprehensive background in human resource management, emphasizing supervision, performance evaluation, and staff development
  • Proven ability in administrative and organizational development, strategic planning, and analytical reporting
  • Exceptional negotiation and conflict resolution skills, with a focus on mentorship and enhancing team management
